Tax Season Successes

Evangelina believes she received a larger refund this year than last year and was absolutely thrilled! She was glad she did not pay the $50 to have her taxes prepared at a tax prep office nearby. She plans on paying some bills and saving a small amount of money for her children.

Melissa was incredibly happy when she found out she could file her taxes at no cost at any ARI office. She stated that she was going to be charged $130 to file her taxes at a local tax office. Because she was able to save that fee, she wanted to save that amount for a rainy day fund for her daughter.

Dongdong was incredibly excited about his EIC return amount! He will be using the return to pay bills and go on a small family getaway this summer. He also plans to save whatever is left for his daughter’s future education. Dongdong was very thankful we were able to provide free tax preparation at no cost to him.

Hoang and his wife do not have much annual income and they look forward to filing their taxes because they are eligible for EITC. This year they were able to receive almost $6,000 in EITC! They plan on paying some past due bills, purchasing groceries and saving a small amount towards a more reliable car.

Filing your taxes on your own can be a lot of work. Not only do we help clients prepare their taxes for free, but we also educate them. As a volunteer, I’ve been able to help our community file for free and learn how to do my own taxes.

How do I make an appointment?

You can make an appointment by calling 2-1-1 in Sacramento or Yolo County or toll free 800-500-4931 or online.

I have an appointment. What do I need to bring to an appointment?

Your driver’s license or other photo identification, your social security card, A W-2, 1099 or earned income statements, last years tax filing documents, dependents’ social security card, childcare records, medical expenses, and educational expenses. Learn more here.

How much money could I receive back on my taxes?

You may qualify for up to $6,500 in CalEITC and federal Earned Income Tax Credits if your household earned less than $30,000. Plus, families with children under the age of 6 may also qualify for an additional $1,000 with the new Young Child Tax Credit. Learn more.

How do you certify your volunteers?

All of our volunteers are IRS-certified and must complete mandatory training.

No. Our services are completely free for individuals who qualify.

Can you prepare my taxes if I don’t speak English?

Yes. We have certified team members at select locations who speak English, Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Arabic, Farsi, Dari, and Hmong. See locations for full details.

How long does an appointment take?

The average appointment lasts 60 minutes. We recommend that you schedule your appointment in advance by calling toll free 800-500-4931 or 2-1-1 in Sacramento or Yolo County or online to skip the lines.

Can I bring my children to my appointment?

Yes, however, childcare is not provided at free tax prep locations.

What is the deadline to file my 2019 return?

The deadline is April 15, 2020.

Is tax help available year round?

We recommend that you file your return on time to avoid any penalties and late fees. However, we have a few sites open throughout the year to help those that need to file late. Call toll free 800-500-4931 or dial 2-1-1 in Sacramento or Yolo County for details.

I need to older tax returns prepared. Can you help me?

Some of our sites can assist clients who need to file older returns. Please be sure to mention which years you need to file when you schedule your appointment so that you are directed to the appropriate site.

Can I file my taxes for free online?

If your 2019 household income was less than $66,000 you are eligible to file your taxes for free online through United Way’s MyFreeTaxes program. Learn more.
